The Day of the LORD

As you look at the intertwining of the Old and New Testament it is clear that there is only one Day of the LORD. For those who have remained righteous, the Day of His visitation will be one of blessing. For the wicked, however, the Day of the LORD will bring judgment, destruction, and terror.

The concept of the Day of the Lord is not only to be found with the phrase “The Day of the LORD”, but can also be found in the phrase “That Day” as you will see in Isaiah, Jeremiah, Hosea, and Amos.

In Isaiah 11 we see the promise of Jesus the Messiah out of the stem of Jesse, and we see the events of the final judgments “with righteousness He will judge the poor, And decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth; And He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked.”

Then the Millennial Kingdom with the wolf will dwell with the lamb. Then in “That Day” the Nations which are the Gentiles will resort to the root of Jesse “Jesus” and his resting place will be glorious. Then “on that day that the Lord Will again recover the second time with His hand The remnant of His people, who will remain” and “And He will lift up a standard for the nations And assemble the banished ones of Israel, And will gather the dispersed of Judah From the four corners of the earth.”

Isaiah 11:1-16
1Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, And a branch from his roots will bear fruit.  2The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding,  The spirit of counsel and strength, The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.  3And He will delight in the fear of the LORD, And He will not judge by what His eyes see, Nor make a decision by what His ears hear;  4But with righteousness He will judge the poor, And decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth; And He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked. 5Also righteousness will be the belt about His loins, And faithfulness the belt about His waist. 6And the wolf will dwell with the lamb, And the leopard will lie down with the young goat, And the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; And a little boy will lead them. 7Also the cow and the bear will graze, Their young will lie down together, And the lion will eat straw like the ox.  8The nursing child will play by the hole of the cobra, And the weaned child will put his hand on the viper's den.  9They will not hurt or destroy in all My holy mountain, For the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD As the waters cover the sea. 10Then in that day The nations will resort to the root of Jesse, Who will stand as a signal for the peoples; And His resting place will be glorious. 11Then it will happen on that day that the Lord Will again recover the second time with His hand The remnant of His people, who will remain, From Assyria, Egypt, Pathros, Cush, Elam, Shinar, Hamath, And from the islands of the sea.  12And He will lift up a standard for the nations And assemble the banished ones of Israel, And will gather the dispersed of Judah From the four corners of the earth. 13Then the jealousy of Ephraim will depart, And those who harass Judah will be cut off; Ephraim will not be jealous of Judah, And Judah will not harass Ephraim. 14They will swoop down on the slopes of the Philistines on the west; Together they will plunder the sons of the east; They will possess Edom and Moab, And the sons of Ammon will be subject to them. 15And the LORD will utterly destroy The tongue of the Sea of Egypt; And He will wave His hand over the River With His scorching wind; And He will strike it into seven streams And make men walk over dry-shod. 16And there will be a highway from Assyria For the remnant of His people who will be left, Just as there was for Israel In the day that they came up out of the land of Egypt.

The first time the scriptures mention The Day of the LORD is in Isaiah you see that in Chapter 2 and 13 are clearly the same pictures as John described in the book of Revelation after the sixth seal.

  Isaiah 2:12-22
12
For the LORD of hosts will have a day of reckoning against everyone who is proud and lofty and against everyone who is lifted up, that he may be abased.   13And it will be against all the cedars of Lebanon that are lofty and lifted up, against all the oaks of Bashan,  14Against all the lofty mountains, against all the hills that are lifted up,  15Against every high tower, Against every fortified wall,  16Against all the ships of Tarshish  and against all the beautiful craft.  17The pride of man will be humbled and the loftiness of men will be abased; and the LORD alone will be exalted in that day,  18But the idols will completely vanish.  19Men will go into caves of the rocks and into holes of the ground before the terror of the LORD and the splendor of His majesty, when He arises to make the earth tremble.  20In that day men will cast away to the moles and the bats their idols of silver and their idols of gold, which they made for themselves to worship,  21In order to go into the caverns of the rocks and the clefts of the cliffs before the terror of the LORD and the splendor of His majesty, when He arises to make the earth tremble.  22Stop regarding man, whose breath of life is in his nostrils; For why should he be esteemed?

Isaiah 13:6-13

6Wail, for the day of the LORD is near!  It will come as destruction from the Almighty.  7Therefore all hands will fall limp, And every man's heart will melt. 8They will be terrified, Pains and anguish will take hold of them;  They will writhe like a woman in labor, They will look at one another in astonishment, Their faces aflame.  9Behold, the day of the LORD is coming, Cruel, with fury and burning anger, To make the land a desolation;  And He will exterminate its sinners from it.  10For the stars of heaven and their constellations Will not flash forth their light;  The sun will be dark when it rises And the moon will not shed its light.  11Thus I will punish the world for its evil And the wicked for their iniquity;  I will also put an end to the arrogance of the proud And abase the haughtiness of the ruthless.  12I will make mortal man scarcer than pure gold And mankind than the gold of Ophir.  13Therefore I will make the heavens tremble, And the earth will be shaken from its place At the fury of the LORD of hosts In the day of His burning anger.

 Revelation 6:12-17
12
I looked when He broke the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth made of hair, and the whole moon became like blood;  13and the stars of the sky fell to the earth, as a fig tree casts its unripe figs when shaken by a great wind.  14The sky was split apart like a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. 15Then the kings of the earth and the great men
and the commanders and the rich and the strong and every slave and free man hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains;  16and they said to the mountains and to the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the presence of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb;  17for the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?"

Then in Isaiah 25 you see that death is swallowed up in that Day, as we also see in I Corinthians 15 as Paul teaches about the mystery of the resurrection at the Last Trumpet.

 Isaiah 25:1-9
1O LORD, You are my God;  I will exalt You, I will give thanks to Your name; For You have worked wonders, Plans formed long ago, with perfect faithfulness.  2For You have made a city into a heap, A fortified city into a ruin; A palace of strangers is a city no more, It will never be rebuilt.  3Therefore a strong people will glorify You;  Cities of ruthless nations will revere You.  4For You have been a defense for the helpless, A defense for the needy in his distress, A refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat;  For the breath of the ruthless  Is like a rain storm against a wall.  5Like heat in drought, You subdue the uproar of aliens;  Like heat by the shadow of a cloud, the song of the ruthless is silenced.  6The LORD of hosts will prepare a lavish banquet for all peoples on this mountain;  A banquet of aged wine, choice pieces with marrow,  And refined, aged wine.  7And on this mountain He will swallow up the covering which is over all peoples, Even the veil which is stretched over all nations.  8He will swallow up death for all time, And the Lord GOD will wipe tears away from all faces, And He will remove the reproach of His people from all the earth;  For the LORD has spoken.  9And it will be said in that day, "Behold, this is our God for whom we have waited that He might save us  This is the LORD for whom we have waited;  Let us rejoice and be glad in His salvation."

1 Corinthians 15:50-58

51Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed,  52in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.  53For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, "DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP in victory55"O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY? O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING?"  56The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law;  57but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.  58Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.

In Jeremiah we see a day of vengeance “And the sword will devour and be satiated and drink its fill of their blood” as we also see in Revelation 19 “From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty.”

Jeremiah 46:10

10For that day belongs to the Lord GOD of hosts, a day of vengeance, so as to avenge Himself on His foes;  And the sword will devour and be satiated and drink its fill of their blood;  For there will be a slaughter for the Lord GOD of hosts,  In the land of the north by the river Euphrates.

Revelation 19:11-19

7"Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready."  8It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. 9Then he said to me, "Write, 'Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb '" And he said to me, "These are true words of God."  10Then I fell at his feet to worship him But he said to me, "Do not do that; I am a fellow servant of yours and your brethren who hold the testimony of Jesus; worship God. For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy." 11And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war.  12His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself.  13He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.  14And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses. 15From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty16And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, "KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS."  17Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and he cried out with a loud voice, saying to all the birds which fly in midheaven, "Come, assemble for the great supper of God,  18so that you may eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of commanders and the flesh of mighty men and the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them and the flesh of all men, both free men and slaves, and small and great."  19And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies assembled to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army.

In Ezekiel we see a warning of the False Prophets who like foxes have deceived Israel to not be prepared for battle on the Day of the Lord, as with 1 Thessalonians 5 “While they are saying, "Peace and safety!" then destruction will come upon them suddenly”

Ezekiel 13:1-13

1Then the word of the LORD came to me saying,  2"Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel who prophesy, and say to those who prophesy from their own inspiration, 'Listen to the word of the LORD!  3'Thus says the Lord GOD, "Woe to the foolish prophets who are following their own spirit and have seen nothing.  4"O Israel, your prophets have been like foxes among ruins.  5"You have not gone up into the breaches, nor did you build the wall around the house of Israel to stand in the battle on the day of the LORD.  6"They see falsehood and lying divination who are saying, 'The LORD declares,' when the LORD has not sent them; yet they hope for the fulfillment of their word.  7"Did you not see a false vision and speak a lying divination when you said, 'The LORD declares,' but it is not I who have spoken?"'" 8Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD, "Because you have spoken falsehood and seen a lie, therefore behold, I am against you," declares the Lord GOD.  9"So My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and utter lying divinations They will have no place in the council of My people, nor will they be written down in the register of the house of Israel, nor will they enter the land of Israel, that you may know that I am the Lord GOD.  10"It is definitely because they have misled My people by saying, 'Peace!' when there is no peace. And when anyone builds a wall, behold, they plaster it over with whitewash;  11so tell those who plaster it over with whitewash, that it will fall. A flooding rain will come, and you, O hailstones, will fall; and a violent wind will break out.  12"Behold, when the wall has fallen, will you not be asked, 'Where is the plaster with which you plastered it?'" 13Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD, "I will make a violent wind break out in My wrath. There will also be in My anger a flooding rain and hailstones to consume it in wrath.

1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

1Now as to the times and the epochs, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you.  2For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. 3While they are saying, "Peace and safety!" then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape.

In Ezekiel 30 we see the warning that the Day of the Lord is near.

Ezekiel 30:1-3

The word of the LORD came again to me saying, "Son of man, prophesy and say, 'Thus says the Lord GOD, "Wail, 'Alas for the day!' "For the day is near, even the day of the LORD is near; It will be a day of clouds, a time of doom for the nations.

In Hosea 2 we see that in that day you “Israel” will call the LORD “Ishi” which often is translated as Husband, and that in that day he will betroth Israel to the LORD in Faithfulness.

 Hosea 2:14-23

14"Therefore, behold, I will allure her, Bring her into the wilderness And speak kindly to her. 15"Then I will give her her vineyards from there, And the valley of Achor as a door of hope  And she will sing there as in the days of her youth,  As in the day when she came up from the land of Egypt.  16"It will come about in that day," declares the LORD, "That you will call Me Ishi  And will no longer call Me Baali.  17"For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, So that they will be mentioned by their names no more.  18"In that day I will also make a covenant for them With the beasts of the field, The birds of the sky And the creeping things of the ground And I will abolish the bow, the sword and war from the land, And will make them lie down in safety. 19"I will betroth you to Me forever;  Yes, I will betroth you to Me in righteousness and in justice, In lovingkindness and in compassion,  20And I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness.  Then you will know the LORD. 21"It will come about in that day that I will respond," declares the LORD. "I will respond to the heavens, and they will respond to the earth,22And the earth will respond to the grain, to the new wine and to the oil,  And they will respond to Jezreel. 23"I will sow her for Myself in the land I will also have compassion on her who had not obtained compassion,  And I will say to those who were not My people, 'You are My people!' And they will say, 'You are my God!'"

The Marriage day is “That Day” which is the Day of the LORD, and is mirrored in Revelation 19 for “Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb”

Revelation 19:7-16
7"Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready."  8It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.  9Then he said to me, "Write, 'Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb '" And he said to me, "These are true words of God."

Romans 9 provides additional clarity that the wedding is “not from among Jews only, but also from among Gentiles” as he the quotes Hosea 2:23 above.

Romans 9:23-26
23
And He did so to make known the riches of His glory upon vessels of mercy, which He prepared beforehand for glory,  24even us, whom He also called, not from among Jews only, but also from among Gentiles.  25As He says also in Hosea, "I WILL CALL THOSE WHO WERE NOT MY PEOPLE, 'MY PEOPLE,' AND HER WHO WAS NOT BELOVED, 'BELOVED.'" 26"AND IT SHALL BE THAT IN THE PLACE WHERE IT WAS SAID TO THEM, 'YOU ARE NOT MY PEOPLE,'  THERE THEY SHALL BE CALLED SONS OF THE LIVING GOD."

Joel starts off in chapter 1 telling the people to “consecrate a fast” and “cry out to the LORD” and with a warning that the Day of the Lord is near.

Joel 1:14-15
14
Consecrate a fast, proclaim a solemn assembly; Gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land to the house of the LORD your God, And cry out to the LORD. 15Alas for the day! For the day of the LORD is near, And it will come as destruction from the Almighty.

As we continue farther into Joel Chapter 2 we see the promise that whoever calls on the name of the LORD will be saved. And again the day comes after the same cosmic disturbances seen in the sixth seal.

Joel 2:28-32
28
And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:  29And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. 30And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.  31The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the LORD come.  32And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.

Joel Chapter 3 provides additional signs that occur before the Day of the Lord for along with seeing once again the cosmic disturbances we also see “Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe come”

 Joel 3:13-21

13Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe come, tread, for the wine press is full; the vats overflow, for their wickedness is great.  14Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision!  For the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.  15The sun and moon grow dark And the stars lose their brightness.  16The LORD roars from Zion and utters His voice from Jerusalem, and the heavens and the earth tremble but the LORD is a refuge for His people and a stronghold to the sons of Israel.  17Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, Dwelling in Zion, My holy mountain So Jerusalem will be holy, and strangers will pass through it no more.  18And in that day the mountains will drip with sweet wine, and the hills will flow with milk, and all the brooks of Judah will flow with water; and a spring will go out from the house of the LORD to water the valley of Shittim.  19Egypt will become a waste, and Edom will become a desolate wilderness, because of the violence done to the sons of Judah, In whose land they have shed innocent blood.  20But Judah will be inhabited forever and Jerusalem for all generations.  21And I will avenge their blood which I have not avenged, for the LORD dwells in Zion.

Revelations 14 makes the same announcement with "Put in your sickle and reap, for the hour to reap has come, because the harvest of the earth is ripe."

 Revelation 14:14:20

14Then I looked, and behold, a white cloud, and sitting on the cloud was one like a son of man, having a golden crown on His head and a sharp sickle in His hand.  15And another angel came out of the temple, crying out with a loud voice to Him who sat on the cloud, "Put in your sickle and reap, for the hour to reap has come, because the harvest of the earth is ripe."  16Then He who sat on the cloud swung His sickle over the earth, and the earth was reaped. 17And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, and he also had a sharp sickle. 18Then another angel, the one who has power over fire, came out from the altar; and he called with a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, saying, "Put in your sharp sickle and gather the clusters from the vine of the earth, because her grapes are ripe."  19So the angel swung his sickle to the earth and gathered the clusters from the vine of the earth, and threw them into the great wine press of the wrath of God.  20And the wine press was trodden outside the city, and blood came out from the wine press, up to the horses' bridles, for a distance of two hundred miles.

Amos Chapter 5 provides additional signs that occur before the Day of the Lord seeing once again the cosmic disturbances. He also warns us to “Seek good and not evil”.

Amos 5:14-20

14Seek good and not evil, that you may live; and thus may the LORD God of hosts be with you , just as you have said!  15Hate evil, love good, and establish justice in the gate! Perhaps the LORD God of hosts may be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.  16Therefore thus says the LORD God of hosts, the Lord, "There is wailing in all the plazas, and in all the streets they say, 'Alas! Alas!' They also call the farmer to mourning and professional mourners to lamentation.  17"And in all the vineyards there is wailing, because I will pass through the midst of you," says the LORD.  18Alas, you who are longing for the day of the LORD, for what purpose will the day of the LORD be to you?  It will be darkness and not light;  19As when a man flees from a lion and a bear meets him, or goes home, leans his hand against the wall and a snake bites him. 20Will not the day of the LORD be darkness instead of light, even gloom with no brightness in it?

Obadiah announces the warning that “the day of the LORD draws near”as well provides additional warnings of “it will be done to you your dealings will return on your own head.”

Obadiah 1:15-21
15"For the day of the LORD draws near on all the nations as you have done, it will be done to you your dealings will return on your own head.  16"Because just as you drank on My holy mountain,  all the nations will drink continually. They will drink and swallow and become as if they had never existed.  17"But on Mount Zion there will be those who escape, and it will be holy and the house of Jacob will possess their possessions.  18"Then the house of Jacob will be a fire and the house of Joseph a flame; but the house of Esau will be as stubble and they will set them on fire and consume them, so that there will be no survivor of the house of Esau," For the LORD has spoken.  19Then those of the Negev will possess the Mountain of Esau, and those of the Shephelah the Philistine plain;  Also, possess the territory of Ephraim and the territory of Samaria, and Benjamin will possess Gilead.  20And the exiles of this host of the sons of Israel, who are among the Canaanites as far as Zarephath, and the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad will possess the cities of the Negev.  21The deliverers will ascend Mount Zion to judge the mountain of Esau, and the kingdom will be the LORD'S.

Zephaniah provides a picture of the destruction by fire as in II Peter and cosmic disturbances.

Zephaniah 1:7-18

7Be silent before the Lord GOD! For the day of the LORD is near, for the LORD has prepared a sacrifice, he has consecrated His guests. 8"Then it will come about on the day of the LORD'S sacrifice that I will punish the princes, the king's sons and all who clothe themselves with foreign garments. 9"And I will punish on that day all who leap on the temple threshold, who fill the house of their lord with violence and deceit. 10"On that day," declares the LORD, "There will be the sound of a cry from the Fish Gate, a wail from the Second Quarter, and a loud crash from the hills. 11"Wail, O inhabitants of the Mortar, For all the people of Canaan will be silenced; all who weigh out silver will be cut off. 12"It will come about at that time that I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish the men who are stagnant in spirit, who say in their hearts,  'The LORD will not do good or evil!'  13"Moreover, their wealth will become plunder and their houses desolate; yes, they will build houses but not inhabit them, and plant vineyards but not drink their wine."  14Near is the great day of the LORD, near and coming very quickly; listen, the day of the LORD! In it the warrior cries out bitterly. 15A day of wrath is that day, a day of trouble and distress, a day of destruction and desolation, a day of darkness and gloom, A day of clouds and thick darkness, 16A day of trumpet and battle cry against the fortified cities and the high corner towers. 17I will bring distress on men so that they will walk like the blind, because they have sinned against the LORD; And their blood will be poured out like dust and their flesh like dung.  18Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them on the day of the LORD'S wrath; and all the earth will be devoured in the fire of His jealousy, for He will make a complete end, indeed a terrifying one, of all the inhabitants of the earth.

II Peter 3:7-13

7But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.  8But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day.  9The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.  10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.  11Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,  12looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat!  13But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.

Zechariah gives us the picture of the final battle around Jerusalem and in the plain of Megiddo which is Har-Magedon or Armageddon. Here is the sign of the Son of Man “so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced” which is a clear Picture of Jesus!

Zechariah12:1-11

1The burden of the word of the LORD concerning Israel. Thus declares the LORD who stretches out the heavens, lays the foundation of the earth, and forms the spirit of man within him,  2"Behold, I am going to make Jerusalem a cup that causes reeling to all the peoples around; and when the siege is against Jerusalem, it will also be against Judah.  3"It will come about in that day that I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples; all who lift it will be severely injured And all the nations of the earth will be gathered against it.  4"In that day," declares the LORD, "I will strike every horse with bewilderment and his rider with madness. But I will watch over the house of Judah, while I strike every horse of the peoples with blindness.  5"Then the clans of Judah will say in their hearts, 'A strong support for us are the inhabitants of Jerusalem through the LORD of hosts, their God.'  6"In that day I will make the clans of Judah like a firepot among pieces of wood and a flaming torch among sheaves, so they will consume on the right hand and on the left all the surrounding peoples, while the inhabitants of Jerusalem again dwell on their own sites in Jerusalem.  7"The LORD also will save the tents of Judah first, so that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem will not be magnified above Judah.  8"In that day the LORD will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the one who is feeble among them in that day will be like David, and the house of David will be like God, like the angel of the LORD before them.  9"And in that day I will set about to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.  10"I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn.  11"In that day there will be great mourning in Jerusalem, like the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the plain of Megiddo.

Matthew 24:30
30
"And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the SON OF MAN COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF THE SKY with power and great glory.

15("Behold, I am coming like a thief Blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his clothes, so that he will not walk about naked and men will not see his shame.")  16And they gathered them together to the place which in Hebrew is called Har-Magedon. 17Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl upon the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple from the throne, saying, "It is done."

Look at what Jesus says in verse 15 “Behold, I am coming like a thief blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his clothes, so that he will not walk about naked and men will not see his shame” for he makes it clear that he still has not come as a thief yet just before the battle “in the plain of Megiddo” which is “the place which in Hebrew is called Har-Magedon” or Armageddon just before the seventh bowl of wrath is poured out!

Malachi makes the warnings clear and he tells us that “Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the LORD” and “He will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, so that I will not come and smite the land with a curse.”

Malachi 4:1-6

1"For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace; and all the arrogant and every evildoer will be chaff; and the day that is coming will set them ablaze," says the LORD of hosts, "so that it will leave them neither root nor branch."  2"But for you who fear My name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings; and you will go forth and skip about like calves from the stall.  3"You will tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day which I am preparing," says the LORD of hosts.  4"Remember the law of Moses My servant, even the statutes and ordinances which I commanded him in Horeb for all Israel.  5"Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the LORD.  6"He will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, so that I will not come and smite the land with a curse."

Then in Revelation we see two Witnesses that many believe could be Elijah and Enoch since neither of them ever died.

Hebrews 11:5

24Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him. Genesis 5:24

5By faith Enoch was taken up so that he would not see death; AND HE WAS NOT FOUND BECAUSE GOD TOOK HIM UP; for he obtained the witness that before his being taken up he was pleasing to God.

II Kings 2:11
11
As they were going along and talking, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire and horses of fire which separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind to heaven.

Revelation 11:3-12

3"And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for twelve hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth."  4These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth.  5And if anyone wants to harm them, fire flows out of their mouth and devours their enemies; so if anyone wants to harm them, he must be killed in this way.  6These have the power to shut up the sky, so that rain will not fall during the days of their prophesying; and they have power over the waters to turn them into blood, and to strike the earth with every plague, as often as they desire.  7When they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up out of the abyss will make war with them, and overcome them and kill them.  8And their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city which mystically is called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified.  9Those from the peoples and tribes and tongues and nations will look at their dead bodies for three and a half days, and will not permit their dead bodies to be laid in a tomb.  10And those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them and celebrate; and they will send gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth.  11But after the three and a half days, the breath of life from God came into them, and they stood on their feet; and great fear fell upon those who were watching them.  12And they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, "Come up here " Then they went up into heaven in the cloud, and their enemies watched them.
